Who was Margaret Mead?

Margaret Mead was an American cultural anthropologist who spent her life studying people on remote islands in the Pacific. Mead was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1901 to a family of educators.

She earned her bachelor’s degree at Barnard College. She then entered graduate school in anthropology at Columbia University, later earning her M.A. and Ph.D. there (Metraux, 1980).

Mentorship Under Franz Boas

At Columbia, Mead studied under Franz Boas, the German-born founder of American cultural anthropology. Boas championed cultural relativism: the view that a society’s beliefs and practices must be judged on their own terms, not against a Western standard (Boas, 1911). This idea shaped her whole career.

Working alongside Boas’s other leading student, Ruth Benedict, Mead helped found the culture-and-personality school. It held that a culture shapes a characteristic personality type through shared child-rearing and institutions, not biology alone. Boas encouraged her to test this claim directly in the field.

The lesson stuck.

In Samoa, Bali, and New Guinea, Mead studied how people lived, particularly those with little contact with Western civilization. Through this work, she challenged Western views on sex, family structure, and how children were raised, and was often a controversial academic (Mark, 1999).

Mead was a prolific author. During the 1960s and 1970s, she became a frequent voice in mass media, commenting on women’s rights, race relations, environmental pollution, and world hunger.

Contributions to the Study of Cultures

Through her decades of anthropological research, Mead preferred to learn about cultures by traveling to remote places of interest and living amongst the people she was studying through fieldwork.

The Study of Culture at a Distance (1953)

Edited by Margaret Mead, The Study of Culture at a Distance (TSCD) was published in 1953 as a manual of anthropological methods. Mead herself called it a “research manual.” It launched several trends that anthropology still follows today.

The TSCD shifted anthropology’s focus from small-scale societies to Western ones. It also set out practical methods for group research, and it suggested anthropologists study film, literature, and popular culture as part of their investigations (Mead et al., 2000).

The manual was rooted in developmental psychology.

Mead insisted it not be written for anthropologists alone. Instead, it was designed so psychologists and linguists could investigate culture together with anthropologists.

Mead was one of the first American anthropologists to apply psychological techniques to culture. She was especially interested in how cultures shape personality, and in what happens when a person’s behavior conflicts with what their society expects of them.

Mead’s Scientific Method

Following the TSCD, Mead’s overall approach to research followed standard scientific method. She moved through four stages.

In an exploratory stage, she developed a hypothesis. In a confirmatory stage, she tested it. In a quantification stage, she used sampling methods to establish reliable relationships, and in a final experimental stage, she tested the reliably sampled hypothesis directly (Mead et al., 2000).

The approach was meant to bring the same rigor to modern Western societies that anthropologists had previously reserved for small-scale societies. Mead’s methodology was organized and systematic. She used advanced fieldwork methods, including photography, film, and psychological testing, plus mixed-sex research teams.

Her studies pioneered fieldwork on childhood, adolescence, and gender, making her a founding figure in culture-and-personality research.

Study in Samoa

In 1925, when Mead was twenty-three years old, she set out on her first field trip to Samoa. Over the next fourteen years, she would study seven cultures across the South Pacific and Indonesia.

Mead’s Samoan fieldwork became the classic, still-debated test case in the nature-nurture debate. It is worth setting out formally.

Aim: To test whether adolescence is universally stressful, as G. Stanley Hall’s “storm and stress” theory claimed, or whether Samoan girls experienced it differently because of their culture.

Method: For nine months in 1925-1926, Mead lived in three villages on the Samoan island of Ta’ū. She used participant observation.

She interviewed and tested around fifty adolescent girls, and observed younger children and adults for context.

Results: Mead reported smooth, undramatic adolescence in Samoa. It lacked the anxiety and rebellion Hall’s theory predicted. She linked this to communal child-rearing, open attitudes to sexuality, and fewer competing models of adulthood than in the West.

Conclusion: Where Hall saw a biological inevitability, Mead saw a cultural pattern: remove the specific pressures of Western upbringing, and the “storm” disappeared. She published her findings in Coming of Age in Samoa (Mead, 1928), a book that has never gone out of print (Mead et al., 1973).

Study in New Guinea and Bali

Gender Roles in New Guinea

In 1930, Mead travelled with her husband and collaborator, Reo Fortune, to the Sepik region of Papua New Guinea. Over two years, she studied three neighbouring societies. She wanted to know if gender roles were fixed by biology or shaped by culture.

Mead recorded her findings in Sex and Temperament in Three Primitive Societies (Mead, 1935).

In her research, Mead found a different pattern of male and female behavior for each culture she studied.

Among the Arapesh, she reported, both men and women were gentle and cooperative. Among the Mundugumor, both sexes were violent and aggressive. Among the Tchambuli, the pattern reversed Western expectations outright: women were dominant and practical, while men were more dependent and emotionally expressive (Mead, 1963). The reversal was striking.

These patterns differed sharply from American gender expectations at the time. Mead concluded that gender differences were shaped by social factors, not biology, a direct argument for cultural determinism.

In 1936, Mead turned to the study of personality in Bali with her husband, Gregory Bateson. There, she explored parent-child interaction, ritual, and artistry.

Mead and Bateson pioneered the systematic use of photography and film as research data. Their work included the film Trance and Dance in Bali (1952) and the book Balinese Character: A Photographic Analysis (Mead & Bateson, 1942).

What did Margaret Mead conclude from her studies?

From her decades of fieldwork and research, Margaret Mead was incredibly influential in contributing to the anthropological as well as the psychological community.

Firstly, Mead’s pioneering work on gender showed how society shapes the construction of gender roles through varying cultural expectations.

In Male and Female (1949), Mead returned to the nature vs. nurture debate. Motherhood, she argued, reinforces both male and female roles in society. Children learn by watching adult behavior, she wrote.

Furthermore, Mead’s research in Samoa found that adolescence was not biologically destined to be a time of extreme stress and anxiety. Instead, the adolescent experience was said to be shaped by the culture in which children grew up.

Finally, Mead also contributed to influential research on the study of personality, finding that cultures emphasize certain aspects of human potential at the expense of others.

Why was Margaret Mead a controversial figure?

The Freeman Controversy

Despite her fame, Mead was a controversial figure among American conservatives, fellow anthropologists, and some of the very people she studied.

Coming of Age in Samoa drew lasting criticism. Some critics accused Mead of romanticizing Samoan life, or of choosing evidence that only supported her hypothesis. Many Samoans also objected to her portrayal of them as “sexually loose” (Shankman, 2013).

Anthropologist Derek Freeman was Mead’s fiercest critic. In Margaret Mead and Samoa: The Making and Unmaking of an Anthropological Myth (Freeman, 1983), Freeman argued that Mead had underestimated biology’s role in adolescence. He claimed some of her female informants had, in effect, “hoaxed” her about Samoan sexual life.

The claim was explosive.

He expanded this claim in a later book (Freeman, 1999). Freeman also argued Mead spent too little time in Samoa and was not fluent enough in the language to catch the deception. His critique made front-page news.

A Balanced Verdict

Later scholarship has not fully backed either side. Lowell Holmes conducted the only direct restudy of Mead’s original fieldsite. He judged her research “remarkably high” in quality, and found Freeman’s refutation methodologically weak (Holmes, 1987).

The picture grew murkier still.

Martin Orans reached a different verdict. Working from Mead’s own field notes and letters, he found neither side met an adequate scientific standard (Orans, 1996). Mead’s claims, he concluded, went beyond what her data could support. Freeman’s hoaxing thesis fared no better.

Paul Shankman went further still. He traced Freeman’s central hoaxing claim to a single 1926 interview, and found the documentary evidence does not support it (Shankman, 2013). Both sides, Shankman later wrote, likely misunderstood her (Shankman, 2009).

The debate still echoes.

Mead died in 1978. Her legacy remains contested. But her core claim survived: a pattern once assumed to be a fixed biological universal can, on closer inspection, turn out to be culturally variable.

Contemporary Research

The question Mead’s fieldwork raised has not gone away. It has been reframed: not which force wins, but how biology and culture interact.

Puberty now arrives earlier. Worthman and Trang (2018) traced this shift across global life-history data published in Nature, linking it mainly to improved nutrition. Social adulthood arrives later. Economic independence, marriage, and parenthood now take longer to reach, driven by expanding education.

The result is a widening “maturity gap” between biological and social adulthood. Biology moves faster than society.

Worthman and Trang concluded that adolescence functions as a biologically embedded window for culture: puberty’s timing and its social meaning interact continuously, rather than competing as rival explanations. This is a direct descendant of the question Mead’s Samoan fieldwork first raised nearly a century earlier.
